Down Bad

I don't agree with Charlie Kirk on anything, but this isn't right

I used to host a show with Andrew Schulz and Nessa on MTV 2 called Jobs That Don’t Suck. Nessa was a real one, but I really didn’t get along with Schulz and at one point had to be separated by our Producer, Darin Byrne, cause Schulz told a offhand joke while warming up the crowd about Asian dick size I wasn’t feeling. It was just basic shit that I’d been hearing since middle school and had come too far to hear him say it in front of a live audience.

People have called me a chink 2 times in public and I’ve fought them both times. The first time was in 3rd grade that became memorialized in the Fresh Off the Boat pilot. The second time was outside Hop Louie during an Arcs listening party. Some drunk Aussie started yelling “stupid chinks” cause they stopped serving him at the bar, so me and another homie jumped him.

You can see it at 1:47 of this video.

Schulz is probably the only person who has ever tried me in a professional setting. He is who he is and has done quite well being the exact dude I met many years ago so I have nothing bad to say. When someone shows you their cards and shows up authentically, you gotta respect it whether you agree or disagree.

I also have to admit I’ve grown up a lot through my relationship with Natashia and don’t need to fight anyone anymore.

If Schulz said it to me in front of a live audience today, I’d probably smile and wait for my opportunity to get him intellectually because the universe rewards patience. Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but justice requires a crock pot. I’m proud of myself and my family and don’t need anyone else to approve or agree. I will just wait for truth to reveal itself like I did when Matt Sauerhoff let his dog off the leash in our building and started yelling at me like I was delivering Chinese food.

Even more recently with my protest of Mubi, there were a lot of people questioning whether I was being “smart”, whether I was ruining my career, etc. A lot of people around me were nervous and a representative of mine even told me, “You are on the wrong side.”

I laughed and didn’t even engage because I had this clarity speaking truth to power and was ok with the repercussions. Sure, life may get hard, doors may close, but when you know who you are and what you are doing, there is an ease to the way you move. And it’s been nice to see how many people are now boycotting Israeli film groups in Hollywood.

I didn’t expect it, I’ve rarely had clarity like this, and borrowing the homie’s adderall may have helped, but I felt the decision in my body and just rolled with it.

I think something that most men and women in a boxing gym will tell you is that you have a lot more respect for people after you fight. I have never hit someone and not felt for them. Once you hit someone, you immediately feel the magnitude of it. There is no one way to explain how it feels to land a punch on another person’s face, but it isn’t simply good or bad; the feeling makes it so.

Real ones will tell you it made them worse.
